Synopsis
This book is a synthesis of the back story of England, the underlying thoughts, themes, and heartbeat of the different eras.
Is Chesterton 100% accurate? No, and allowances must be made for the time in which he lived (statements he makes historically about Muslims and Jews are sure to prove uncomfortable to many, but that isn't the point of the book). I do believe that Chesterton is largely on point in his analysis of England's history, and if he is not, he provides good food for thought.
Those who are familiar with Chesterton will be delighted that this book contains his astute analysis & knack for seeing the heart of the issue. For those unfamiliar with Chesterton, his ability to turn things inside out and turn them on their head may take some adjusting to. The effort is worth it.
This short history of England is recommended if you wish to see behind the scenes & have a sense of the cast already. If you need the stage set, however, this work is better left for another time. [Amazon]
