Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"The first Anglo-Sikh war was a British victory, but the powerful Khalsa ('Sikh army') was kept intact. War resumed in 1848, and the battle of Chillianwala, in January 1849, was a draw, with heavy casualties on both sides.… After the rout at Gujarat, hostilities ended on March 11, 1849. Three days later the Sikh army formally surrendered to Major-General Gilbert. Then the Punjab was annexed and its infant ruler, Duleep Singh, deposed. Yet the Sikhs became loyal subjects, and a fearsome fighting force, under the cap Raj." [1001 Days]
