Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"Gregory chose Augustine to head the mission and he left for Britain in 596 with forty monks. . . . In 597 the monks landed in what is now Kent. King Ethelbert welcomed the monks at his court and not long afterwards became a Christian. . . . One of the new monks was Paulinus, who would become the first missionary to the powerful northern Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria, where he converted King Ethelbert's son-in-law, King Edwin, in 627."
