Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"One of the first acts of Oswald on becoming king of Northumbria was to send for Aidan, an Irish monk from Iona. In 635, the king asked Aidan to be a bishop in Northumbria and gave him the tiny island of Lindisfarne (also known as Holy Island), which lies just off the coast not far from the royal stronghold of Bamburgh, to build a monastery. . . . He [Aidan] made Lindisfarne the base of his evangelizing mission and set up a school there to train future priests and bishops--among them Chad, who became the first bishop of Lichfield. . . . The Lindisfarne Gospels, an illuminate book and masterpiece of religious art, which was completed in the monastery about 715 and is now in the British Museum." [1001 Days]
