Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"Marching his assembled army toward Chippenham, Alfred was met by the Danes under Gutrum at Deignton, According to the contemporary chronicler Bishop Asser, after a hard fight, King Alfred's men drove the Danes from the field. . . . Alfred forced Guthrum to hand over hostages, promise to leave Wessex, and accept conversion to Christianity. The victory at Edington drove the Danes back to 'Danelaw'--the north and east of England--while Alfred strengthened his defenses." [1001 Days]
