Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"His chief legacy is that he worked to strengthen the strong links between church and state started by Otto I, the first German Holy Roman Emperor. . . . Arduin [a rival for the throne of Italy] was overcome without much difficulty and Henry was crowned king of Italy at Pavia on May 15, 1004. Arduin rebelled again in 1013, but was quickly defeated. It was this victory that saw Henry become Holy Roman Emperor. Henry's reign is significant in that the jurisdiction of the bishops was strengthened against the monasteries and their temporal power came to cover large territories." [1001 Days]
