Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"In 1137, Louis VI died, and his successor, Louis VII, rejected Suger as adviser. Thus freed from his former responsibilities, Suger turned his attention to the church of St. Denis, which was attached to the abbey and dated back to 737. . . . The new structure was completed and dedicated on June 11, 1144. One hundred years later, the nave was rebuilt in the same Gothic style. Under the influence of the Angevin kings, the style spread throughout Europe, becoming the blueprint for the design of many churches and cathedrals." [1001 Days]
