Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"Spain was in turmoil. Formally Spain and France were allies, but Napoleon did not trust king Charles IV of Spain, nor his minister Godoy. During the winter of 1807-1808 more French formations moved to northern Spain, nominally to support the troops in Portugal, but there they stayed. A palace coup removed Charles and Godoy on March 19, and Charles's son Ferdinand was proclaimed king. Napoleon ordered his brother-in-law Murat to enter Madrid, and he arrived with his troops on March 23. Charles and Ferdinand were summoned to France and told they had to abdicate in favor of Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon's elder brother. Ferdinand refused. On May 2, the population of Madrid rose against the French. Marshall Murat knew how to deal with civil disturbance; the rising was suppressed with violence, episodes vividly depicted in the paintings of Goya. . . . The French reestablished control of Madrid and the major cities, but the Spanish people never accepted the domination of Napoleon and his French soldiers." [1001 Days]
